The Festspielhaus Hellerau near Dresden is considered the center for the historical development of the Rhythmics movement in Europe. At the same time, it is a place where artistic experimentation with this approach continues to take place. Rhythmics is both an artistic and pedagogical process in which music, movement and language interact beyond the normal use of these genres. It combines various concepts and traditions which allow contemporary artistic interpretations as well. In this manner, Rhythmics provides a foundation to integrate different ways of perception.
The Institute for Rhythmics Hellerau organizes a yearly International Rhythmics Workshop for interested individuals in Germany and throughout Europe. This workshop offers a variety of opportunities to deepen artistic experience as well as to explore personal expression and communication. In addition, this workshop promotes the on-going artistic tradition of the Festspielhaus and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hellerau as a garden city.
The 2009 workshop aims to actively integrate school children, students, educators and interested individuals from Hellerau and the city Dresden in all the public events. Dalcroze 2009 has chosen the theme of Language-Sound-Movement and will explore the interchange between Rhythmics and Language. This theme will provide the basis for the participatory and expressive forms to be experienced in the workshops, studio sessions, presentations and performances.
The performances and workshops will explore areas of musical approaches to language development, the design of language and language expression. They have been designed to present both contemporary research as well as practical knowledge. The participants will learn about various artistic approaches as well as experience new forms of expression in the Ateliers. The World Rhythmics Café® will offer an open forum for discussion among the participants and interested parties. In addition, it will provide an experience on how music, body expression and language can flow together as part of a collective conversation.
“Rhythmics practitioners, educators, musicians, performance artists as well as interested individuals from related fields are cordially invited to experience the 9th International Rhythmics Workshop”.

All over the world rhythmic energies are created through the use of creative vocal syllables, imitation of percussion sounds and body movement. The interaction between voice, movement and instruments will be explored in order to better understand different concepts of rhythm. - Prof. Reinhard Ring (Hannover)

Texts will be choreographed into movement. The participants will be requested to choose poems, word echoes, language rhythms and content in order to use them as an inspiration for movement. This process will foster new levels of the perception of language. - Annette Jahns (Dresden)
How modern is the Romantic era?
Working with the Texts of Joseph von Eichendorf and others Texts from the Romantic period are images of desire, dreams as well as fear.
